EuroMillions Spain
Last updated Written by Euro reporter
EuroMillions is one of the biggest lottery games available in Spain. Spanish players take part in the same European EuroMillions draw as players in France, the UK, Belgium and several other European countries. Spanish tickets also include entry into El Millón, a separate draw offering a €1 million prize.
What makes the Spanish version different is not the balls in the machine but everything around them: a state operator (SELAE) with more than 10,000 sales points, a bet that is legally split into two parts (€2.20 for EuroMillions and €0.30 for El Millón), a 20% prize tax above €40,000, and a player base so large that Spain alone accounts for roughly one in five EuroMillions tickets sold across the whole of Europe. This page collects the results, the rules and the numbers that most EuroMillions sites never publish.

Exclusive detail: in that single draw Spanish players collected 377,489 of the 2,041,133 prizes paid out across Europe — 18.5% of all winning tickets on the continent. That ratio is remarkably stable draw after draw, because the Spanish share of ticket sales is equally stable (see the data section below).
Current EuroMillions Jackpot
Next EuroMillions Jackpot: €98 Million
Draw: Tuesday 8 September 2026, 21:00 (Spanish peninsular time)
Ticket sales in Spain close at 20:30 on the day of the draw.
The previous draw carried €89 million and generated €53.2 million in European ticket sales, of which €10.5 million came from Spain. The jackpot rises in fixed steps until it reaches the €250 million cap, after which any surplus is pushed down into the next winning prize tier.
How EuroMillions Works in Spain
EuroMillions is a transnational lottery, but each country sells it through its own operator. In Spain that operator is Sociedad Estatal Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE), the same state company behind La Primitiva, Bonoloto, La Quiniela and the Christmas Lottery.
- The draw itself is European. Five main numbers from 1–50 and two Lucky Stars from 1–12 are drawn in Paris every Tuesday and Friday, at around 21:00 CET/CEST.
- The prize pool is shared. Ticket money from all nine participating countries flows into one common pool, so a Spanish ticket competes for exactly the same jackpot as a French or British one.
- The extras are national. Spain adds El Millón, France adds My Million, the UK adds the Millionaire Maker, Portugal adds M1lhão. These raffles are funded and paid nationally.
- The tax is national too. A Spanish ticket is taxed under Spanish law, even if the winner lives abroad.
Spain has been part of EuroMillions since the very first draw on 13 February 2004, alongside France and the UK. The second draw day (Tuesday) was added in 2011, and the Lucky Star pool grew from 11 to 12 numbers in 2016 — the same change that pushed the Spanish bet from €2.20 to €2.50 and financed El Millón.

What a multiple bet really costs
This is where Spanish players spend far more than they expect. A multiple bet is priced per combination, so the cost curve is brutal:

|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 | €2.50 |
| 6 | 6 | €15 |
| 7 | 21 | €52.50 |

| 9 | 126 | €315 |
| 10 | 252 | €630 |
Where to buy
- Administraciones de lotería and despachos receptores — the classic red-and-yellow points of sale found in every Spanish town.
- The official SELAE website and app, which require a registered account with a Spanish bank account.
- Peñas (syndicates) — but only a syndicate formally registered with SELAE before the draw is recognised for tax purposes.
Practical rule most players miss: for any prize above €2,000 you must supply a bank account in your own name, using the details of the winning bet, within three months of the last draw the ticket entered.
What is El Millón?
El Millón is Spain’s exclusive add-on raffle. Every simple EuroMillions bet validated in Spain automatically receives a unique code made of three letters and five digits (for example FRN 75945). One code is drawn after each EuroMillions draw and wins a guaranteed €1,000,000.
- No extra action, no extra choice. The code is generated by the terminal and printed on the ticket.
- All or nothing. Every character must match in the same position — there are no consolation prizes for partial matches.
- Guaranteed winner. Because the code is drawn from codes actually sold, there is a Spanish millionaire in every single draw.
- Odds depend on volume. SELAE puts them at roughly 1 in 5,000,000, based on an average of about five million bets per draw.
El Millón facts you will not find on most sites
- First draw: 30 September 2016. The very first El Millón code was sold in Setenil de las Bodegas (Cádiz), a village of fewer than 3,000 inhabitants.
- Friday-only until 2019. From Tuesday 5 March 2019 El Millón is also drawn on Tuesdays, doubling Spain’s output to two guaranteed millionaires per week — around 104 new €1 million winners a year.
- El Millón Plus. On special occasions SELAE multiplies the number of €1 million codes. In the European “Lluvia de Millones” of 21 January 2022, 100 prizes of €1 million were drawn ac
EuroMillions Prize Categories
Spain uses the same 13 prize categories as the rest of Europe. A prize starts at two matching numbers, or one number plus both Lucky Stars.
Category Match Typical Spanish name Odds 1st 5 + 2 Primera categoría (bote) 1 in 139,838,160 2nd 5 + 1 Segunda categoría 1 in 6,991,908 3rd 5 + 0 Tercera categoría 1 in 3,107,515 4th 4 + 2 Cuarta categoría 1 in 621,503 5th 4 + 1 Quinta categoría 1 in 31,075 6th 3 + 2 Sexta categoría 1 in 14,125 7th 4 + 0 Séptima categoría 1 in 13,811 8th 2 + 2 Octava categoría 1 in 985 9th 3 + 1 Novena categoría 1 in 706 10th 3 + 0 Décima categoría 1 in 314 11th 1 + 2 Undécima categoría 1 in 188 12th 2 + 1 Duodécima categoría 1 in 49 13th 2 + 0 Decimotercera categoría 1 in 22 Extra El Millón code El Millón ≈ 1 in 5,000,000 Every draw guarantees a prize fund of at least €17 million, and the jackpot is capped at €250 million.
Odds of Winning EuroMillions
The overall chance of winning something is 1 in 13. The chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in 139,838,160 — a figure with a very Spanish twist: it is exactly ten times harder than La Primitiva’s jackpot (1 in 13,983,816) and precisely equal to La Primitiva’s Special Category with the Reintegro.
Put in local terms: at 4.4 million Spanish bets per draw, a Spanish player wins the jackpot on average once every 32 draws’ worth of national ticket volume — but because the pool is European, actual Spanish jackpot wins arrive in clusters, often several in one year and then none for months.
Spain’s most frequently drawn numbers
According to SELAE’s own official statistics page (updated 4 September 2026), the historical frequency leaders are:
Number Times drawn (all-time) 42 224 44 224 23 223 19 220 29 219 10 217 17 216 21 213 37 212 50 211 The coldest numbers over the same period are 22 (154), 33 (173) and 46 (177). The gap between the hottest and coldest ball is about 70 appearances in roughly 2,000 draws — statistically ordinary noise, not a pattern. EuroMillions Tax in Spain
Spain is one of only three EuroMillions countries that tax prizes (the others are Portugal and Switzerland). Winnings fall under the Gravamen Especial sobre los Premios de Determinadas Loterías y Apuestas, created by Ley 16/2012.
- First €40,000 tax free. The exemption applies per prize, not per ticket.
- 20% on everything above €40,000, withheld automatically by SELAE or the paying bank.
- Final and liberatory. The prize is not declared again as income in your annual IRPF return; SELAE issues a withholding certificate.
- Exemption history: €2,500 before 2018, then €10,000 (2018), €20,000 (2019) and €40,000 from 1 January 2020 onwards.
- Non-residents are also taxed at source, though a tax treaty may allow a partial refund.
Prize Taxable part Tax at 20% Net payout €35,000 €0 €0 €35,000 €50,000 €10,000 €2,000 €48,000 €1,000,000 (El Millón) €960,000 €192,000 €808,000 €190,000,000 (record jackpot) €189,960,000 ≈ €37.99 million ≈ €152 million The syndicate trap: if a peña is registered with SELAE before the draw, every member receives their share as a separate prize with its own €40,000 exemption. If it is not registered, only the ticket holder is recognised, and money handed to friends afterwards can be treated as a gift subject to regional inheritance and gift tax — which ranges from almost nothing in Madrid to a serious bill in Asturias or Aragón.
EuroMillions Draw Days and Times

Spain held 104 EuroMillions draws in 2025, and prizes must be claimed within three months of the draw. Unclaimed money is real: in 2025 Spanish players failed to collect €62.6 million in SELAE prizes overall, including roughly €3 million from EuroMillions in a recent three-year window.
EuroMillions Spain in Numbers: Exclusive Player Data
This is the part of the Spanish EuroMillions story that rarely gets told. The figures below come from SELAE’s published accounts, official statistics and draw-by-draw sales data.
Indicator Figure SELAE total sales, 2025 €10,586 million (company record, +1.87% vs 2024) EuroMillions sales in Spain, 2024 €1,074.4 million EuroMillions sales in Spain, 2025 ≈ €1,135 million (+5.6%) Equivalent simple bets, 2025 ≈ 454 million Average bets per draw ≈ 4.4 million Spanish sales in the draw of 4 Sep 2026 €10.50 million of €53.22 million Europe-wide Spain’s share of European ticket money ≈ 19.7% Spain’s share of all EuroMillions prizes won ≈ 18.5% in that draw Guaranteed Spanish millionaires per year (El Millón) ≈ 104 Core player age group targeted by SELAE 30–50 years, with EuroMillions and EuroDreams overlapping at 35–50 SELAE advertising budget approved for 2026 €26.6 million, with growth focused on women aged 35–55 Unclaimed SELAE prizes, 2025 €62.59 million Three conclusions you can draw from this data
- Spain is EuroMillions’ second engine. Roughly a fifth of every European jackpot is funded by Spanish ticket money, which is why Spain and France historically lead the jackpot-winner count.
- Spanish players are jackpot-driven. The 5.6% sales jump in 2025 tracked a jackpot cycle about 30% higher than the previous year — Spanish sales rise and fall with the size of the bote, not with habit.
- The real Spanish edge is El Millón. Ignore the €139-million-to-one jackpot for a moment: a Spanish ticket also buys a 1-in-5-million shot at a guaranteed prize that is won every single draw, in Spain, by someone holding an ordinary €2.50 slip.
